There are many people, besides me, who have gotten married through dating apps.
A certain lawyer got married using an app called Tinder. “I believe it’s undoubtedly an innovative way to get married. When I tried it, I realized that it offers opportunities to meet a wide range of people beyond my existing social circle,” he mentioned in the Lawyers’ Association Newsletter from December 2019.
A certain surgeon got married after dating for 10 months on an app called Pairs. Although he lives in Hokuriku and only got six matches after setting specific criteria, he liked all of them and chose his wife from those who responded quickly.
A man in his thirties working for a major company found his wife on an app called Zexy Konkatsu and got married just two months after matching. He even proposed with a 2 million yen Harry Winston ring. Now, they have a child and have bought a new house, looking very happy.
Pairs has a “Marriage Report” section for its members. Let’s look at the marriage ages of couples in their forties and above:
- 43-year-old male × 37-year-old female
- 46-year-old male × 46-year-old female
- 57-year-old male × 35-year-old female
- 48-year-old male (with child) × 45-year-old female
- 43-year-old male (with child) × 41-year-old female (pregnant!)
- 41-year-old male (with child) × 36-year-old female
- 39-year-old male × 39-year-old female
- 31-year-old male × 39-year-old female
- 41-year-old male × 41-year-old female
It’s clear that people in their forties and fifties are actively finding their partners. All of them got married within a year of matching.
Even celebrities have gotten married through dating apps.
Tsutsui Natsumi, who represented Japan in the 2017 Miss International and ranked fifth globally, married the CEO of an IT company through Tinder. Although she had met over 100 men through traditional matchmaking and dating parties, she found her destiny on the app.
Momo, who appeared on the popular dating show “Ainori,” also used Tinder. She got engaged to a handsome younger man after dating for three months and registered their marriage six months later.
Author Shimada Kana got married at 50 to a man three years her junior. She communicated with 120 people on the app, met 23 of them, and then made her decision.
A certain underground idol also married a regular man she met on an app. She wanted to marry someone far from the idol world to avoid affecting her career, so she looked for someone who seemed like a regular office worker on the app, as mentioned on NHK’s TV show “Nehorin Pahorin” broadcasted on February 8, 2017.
Even overseas, people have gotten married through dating apps.
Famous investor Michael Burry used Match.com. In his profile, he wrote, “A medical student with only one eye, socially awkward, and burdened with a $145,000 student loan.” His wife was apparently attracted to his honest self-introduction. Later, Burry made a fortune by short-selling during the subprime loan collapse.
Deborah Ann Woll, known from Netflix’s “Daredevil,” dated a comedian she met on Match.com for 11 years before getting married. Her husband had a rare disease that made him go blind, but he was upfront about it, which she found refreshing.
Moreover, many celebrities use these apps without necessarily getting married.
Former TV Tokyo announcer Washimi Reina mentioned on a TV show that she registered on an app because she didn’t have many opportunities to meet people. On her profile, she blurred her face and listed her occupation as working for an event company, as revealed on TV Tokyo’s “Ie, Tsuite Itte Ii Desu Ka?” broadcasted on March 18, 2020.
Following this broadcast, Ogiyahagi’s Ogi mentioned on a radio show that he knows female celebrities who use dating apps. They don’t show their faces on the app but meet and date people they match with, as disclosed on TBS Radio’s “Ogiyahagi no Megane Biiki” broadcasted on March 20, 2020.
Other celebrities like Watanabe Naomi, Tanpopo Kawamura, Nobushikobushi Yoshimura, Impulse Teishita, and Mizuhara Kiko have also publicly stated that they use dating apps.
Haruna Ai has been dating a younger boyfriend she met on an app for an impressive five years, as shared on Yomiuri TV’s “Kamizuma & Takada no Kugizuke!” broadcasted on June 28, 2020.
So, what do you think? Not just ordinary people, but also authors, actors, and other celebrities have found their partners through dating apps.
Nowadays, dating apps are not just reluctantly used by those who can’t find a partner. Many attractive people are actively using them to find their significant others.
